The-Craftastics-Agents-for-Social-Change-Winnipeg

Sometimes we also scream about good things at SCREAMING IN ALL CAPS — and this is AWESOME.

A group of righteous teenage girls from right here in Winnipeg have created a set of superhero trading cards for a squad of superheroes dubbed The Craftastics.

Based on themselves, this girl group fights the good fight against everyday evils that cast long dark shadows over the halls of high school.

These young ladies are part of the Valley Garden Grrlz Club (awesome), a River East Transcona School Division after-school program. It’s a safe space to make crafts, chill out and talk about everything — gender discrimination, stereotyping, body-issues, depression, anxiety, gossip, peer pressure and bullying. Under the guidance of local artist Jenny O, those candid conversations resulted in The Craftastics: Agents for Social Change.

The superheroes they came up with are amazing — so amazing that their story has already been picked up by both Jezebel and the Bitch blog. There’s The Bookmark, whose mission is to end discrimination against nerds. There’s Click, who dismantles cliques and ends gossip. The Masked Peacock, meanwhile, fights racism.

AND NOT A LAMÉ HOTPANT IN SIGHT, YOU GUYS!
